Fawehinmi's Centre: Mimiko awards N250m contract to Iyabo Obasanjo's Vamed Engineering Ltd
Muruf Akinlade, Liberty News, Akure. Date & Time Filed on MyOndoState.Com: 2010-02-17 12:32:14

Just as the dust over the Iyabo Obasanjo's case of impersonation is settling, another controversy is erupting in Ondo State where the company at the heart of the Iyabo Obasanjo/Damilola Akinlawon's saga has secured a juicy contract which first phase is valued at N250million for the building of the Gani Fawehinmi Diagnostic Centre without observing due process.

Sources close to Mimiko who prefer anonymity volunteered that this latest move by Mimiko was aimed at securing the favour of Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello for inroad into the heart of General Olusegun Obasanjo with the ultimate goal of using the relationship as a fall-back position in case Mallam Musa Yaradua is unable to reclaim his presidency due to ill health. Those familiar with Ondo State politics know the current power equation and that Dr. Mimiko via the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor has the ears of President Yaradua. He is able to secure juicy federal appointments for his preferred candidates. An example is the recent appointment of Mr. Benson Enikuomehin who was vehemently opposed by the Ondo State PDP but was nonetheless appointed into the Board of the NDDC since he was the preferred candidate of Dr. Mimiko. This type of favour currying politics was the main reason that Dr. Segun Mimiko maintained absolute silence throughout the Yaradua's illness imbroglio even when the progressive community had expected that he would lend his star weight to the truth like Mr. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State did.

It should be recalled that the same Vamed Engineering was used by Olusegun Obasanjo to refurbish 17 teaching hospitals in Nigeria and has come under intense public scrutiny as a mere front for Iyabo Osasanjo-Bello and Prince Albert Awofisayo to siphon tax payers’ money. Some not-for -profit organizations had sent a petition to the National Assembly after Obsanjo left government, alleging a breach of due process in the manner Vamed Engineering Limited emerged the sole bidder for the juicy contracts of refurbishing Nigerian teaching hospitals. A Senate Committee was informed at the session that VAMED was kicking against the decision by the Health Ministry to award the contract for the upgrade of the 12 Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) through a competitive bidding.

Vamed was originally packaged to do business as an international company using the name of an established Austrian firm Vamed Engineering GMBH and Co-Kg thus giving it international clout. This was the 'international' dummy sold to the then Health Minister, Prof. A.B.C Nwosu who gleefully announced the contract’s decision to media men at a press conference which was widely reported in the national dallies on Friday, November 29 2002. Speaking on the implementation of the multimillion naira pact on re-equipping the hospitals, Nwosu said the hospitals would also be upgraded into five-star health institutions at the end of the implementation of the contract implying that end would come to the need for Nigerians to travel overseas for medical treatment. Existing realities in the nations' teaching hospital after Vamed had got full payments for jobs 'well done' however speak otherwise. The eight hospitals that benefited from the first phase of the project are: University College Hospital, Ibadan; Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria; University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu; and University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt.

No sooner had the contracts sailed through at the federal executive council that the true identities of Vamed Engineering Limited owners became known and they carefully eliminated the earlier prominent use of the Austrian version of the name, Vamed Engineering GMBH and Co-Kg. Through Iyabo Obasanjo's influence, it cornered all the chunky contracts in the nation's health sector. Trouble however began for the company when Olusegun Obasanjo was replaced by Yaradua and the company's days of using influence to secure contracts came to an end until this recent decision to honour late Gani Fawehinmi.

Interestingly, the same international 'dummy' was the selling point employed by the Ondo State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Akin Adaramola, when he briefed pressmen in Akure on Wednesday while analysing details of the 2010 budget to journalists.
An associate of the late human right lawyer and legal luminary, Chief Gani Fawehinmi who is to be honoured by the Diagnostic Centre said Dr. Mimiko "knows the type of people Late Gani Fawehinmi loved to associate himself with. He would have been careful by not doing the wrong thing in bringing people or controversial companies to rubbish the fond memories of the late legal icon".
